Philippines: A New Catalyst for Technological Evolution

Updated: Aug 24, 2022

As the world witnesses the end-tail of what the pandemic had bestowed upon us all, various countries, on the other hand, continue to make maneuvers towards more advancements to patch up the gaps that the previous years had burrowed within the states of countries and society. And as the world continuously surges toward new developments, and as more modernizations are being broadcasted internationally, the Philippines is one that is on the verge of emerging when it comes to technological innovations.

Despite the country’s recent ranking of the world's most technologically advanced nations, the Philippines dropped seven places to 61st place overall, in late May. Yet such hindrances would not be taken as a flaw to not pursue advancements for the betterment of the country and the Filipinos affected by the case. Considering that the years to come will be emphasized as a new era and beginning for progress in technology.

In terms of current notable instances, today’s technological advancements are reshaping the business, education sector, and socioeconomic background within the Philippines, especially the pharmaceutical and applied science – such as experimental and theoretical science – and towards the COVID-19 situation. According to the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP), and as quoted by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), evolving technologies have been shown to be essential in the fight against COVID-19. For instance, viral detection and infection testing have both been done using biotechnology.

More advanced medical technology, such as Artificial Intelligence, or AI, will subsequently be associated as a highly accurate compass and tool that makes it simpler to identify diseases, predicaments, and their treatments. Outlooks also indicate that during the next three years, people-centric approaches in precision medicine are projected to become a significant trend across several areas of treatment, including illness prevention, healthcare, and even future research. According to Cisco Philippines (2022), businesses' networks are built on agility, hybrid work, and the shift to cloud, software, and services. Due to the movement constraints imposed by various quarantine measures, the COVID-19 pandemic has encouraged organizations to implement digital platforms.

Moreover, societies have been adjusting to work-from-home environments and newly discovered online platforms and mediums of the sorts for work and even recreational purposes. As the days casually roll away, these changes are altering Filipino lives and giving people, businesses, and marketing opportunities to produce value and to strive in various ways during certain periods. With the help of further research, by nurturing sustainability, social media platforms, and internet technologies, people have also been able to interact while they were physically distant. This has helped to support easier and safer social instances, for children to become flexible in distant learning, and to provide better support, service, and feedback for business continuity. More significantly, innovations and technologies have been crucial in helping the economy grow and boost post-pandemic economic recovery and survive from the start of the pandemic, especially to where it is today. Slowly but surely, the Philippines will draw its silver lining from its horrid current state within the eyes of advancements.
